BARNSTAPLE Town’s strong defensive display was enough to move them to the top of the Toolstation Western League First Division as they drew 0-0 with Chard Town.

Barnstaple were unable to add a clinical touch in front of goal and squandered chances early on but the point saw them move above Wincanton Town and Ashton and Backwell United on goal difference with games in hand.

Ryan Turner had the best effort of the first half as he rounded the keeper in a swift move but was unable to find the net.

The away side pressed hard and centre back James Mayne produced an outstanding performance at the back, winning critical headers and making key blocks to help secure his side’s 11th clean sheet of the season.

Turner glanced a header against the post and Barnstaple had two penalty shouts waved away.

Barnstaple’s best chance in the second half came in the dying minutes when the ball was scrambled off the line from Mayne’s effort.
