By my reckoning, and I have checked more times than I check my lottery numbers on a Saturday night, Barnstaple Town will have clocked up 2,500 Western Football League games come March 2015.
To put it in more detail – the club took up membership in season 1948/49 and played their first ever Western Football League fixture on Saturday 28th August 1948 at home to Trowbridge Town Reserves. Fast forward to season 2014/15 and once the club has clocked up 34 Western Football League games – around mid-March 2015 – that will be the day to celebrate.
It is also worth noting that the figure of 2,500 represents unbroken membership of the Western Football League. Only Welton Rovers can boast a better record.
Once we are into the New Year we shall have a clearer picture as to what date the magical figure falls. Barnstaple Town Football Club will then announce the plans for the day.
I am sure this will include an open invitation to former players, committee members and the like to join us at our headquarters at Mill Road and share our memories. I know that plans are being made to produce a commemorative match day programme to mark the occasion. Watch this space!
