BARNSTAPLE Town are through to the quarter-finals of the Toolstation Western League’s Les Phillips Cup, where they will face Wellington, after a 2-1 victory in extra-time against Cribbs.
Ryan Turner handed Barnstaple a lifeline as he scored to make it 1-1 with two minutes left of normal time before Dave Pearse went on to secure the win in extra-time.
Playing in a new-look 3-5-2 formation, Town had a Jack Jenkins effort cleared off the line and saw Turner’s rasping effort flash the wrong side of the post in the first half.
The game swayed in Cribbs’ favour in the second half when they went 1-0 up. A nervy 20-minute spell for Barnstaple saw them avoid further damage before subs Jed Harper-Penman and Steve Holland helped restore the balance.
With pace and an extra creative spark, Barum pushed for the equaliser and Turner took his chance with a poacher’s effort.
Once in front, Barnstaple eased to victory in extra-time as Pearse scored the winner with a hooked effort over his shoulder and the five-man midfield retained possession.
Wellington went through with a 1-0 win over Oldland Abbotonians but may face their last-eight trip to Mill Road with trepidation having lost 7-1 there in the league on Boxing Day.
