BARNSTAPLE Town were back to their best as they beat Calne Town 7-0 to return to the top of the Toolstation Western League First Division.
After Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw at Cheddar, Town took their goal tally to 110 in the league this season, overcoming the previous record which had stood for more than 10 years.
With Welton Rovers’ match at Almondsbury UWE postponed, the win also took Barnstaple top of the table on goal difference
Steve Holland, flying down the right-hand side in a 3-5-2 formation, slotted home the first goal after 21 minutes.
Barnstaple continued to press with half-chances flashing wide before Jack Jenkins headed in from a free-kick.
In the second half, Liam Gregory whipped a fizzing cross beyond the Calne backline and Will Nicholls was on hand to poke home from close-range. Nicholls then added the fourth on 61 minutes from Ryan Turner’s parried shot.
Turner turned goalscorer with an individual effort to make it 5-0, wriggling past two challenges in the box before smashing the ball home.
With Barnstaple rampant, Lee Francis scored the sixth eight minutes after going on from the bench. The midfielder darted from the edge of the penalty area into the six-yard box, clipping a shot against the post and following up on the rebound.
There was time for one more as, five minutes from the final whistle, Tom Rossiter made it 7-0 with a thumping effort from a deep free-kick.
