Saturday’s home game vs Warminster saw us celebrate reaching the 2,500 Western League game milestone against Hengrove Athletic the previous Tuesday. This was played in front of the season’s highest league crowd of 313, with just a single point needed to guarantee finishing 2nd and win promotion. The game started well, very well in fact, with Barum scoring after just 9 seconds!! We eventually ran out 3-1 winners with the usual bottle of champagne being sprayed around after the game. That win took the unbeaten run to 37, the GD for the season to +101, and set a new club record of 28 wins in a season. The icing on the cake was the news that filtered into Mill Road via the Twittersphere that Welton Rovers – the only team who could now catch Barum – had lost at home to Portishead, meaning that just 3 points were needed from Barum’s last three games, barring the overturning of a +61 GD, to see them lift the title.
On Tuesday Welton Rovers play their game in hand, so Barum can travel to Oldland Abbotonians next Saturday knowing that all they have to do to win the league is to match, or better, Welton’s result.
Saturdays win against Warminster was Barum’s 999th in the Western League, so with three games to go there is every chance that they will reach the milestone of 1,000 wins before the end of the season. The very first win was a 9-0 victory vs National Smelting Company on Saturday 11th Sept 1948.
