FORMER chairman Steve James has been appointed president of Barnstaple Town.

Mr James replaces John Brend who served for 10 years but has stepped down because of increasing business commitments.

Jasmine Chesters, the current club chairman, said: “The board and management committee are sad to see Mr Brend relinquish his post but understand his position.

“We are pleased to welcome Mr James back on board and realise many supporters will be very glad to hear the news.”

Mr James, who was creative director at Bray Leino where he worked for more than 25 years, became Barnstaple’s chairman in September 2005 following the retirement of Roy Lucas.

He oversaw and helped fund major changes at Mill Road, including the refurbishment of the clubhouse and changing rooms.

Mr James relinquished the role in January 2012 to concentrate on his business interests.

He said he was pleased to be asked to lead the club and was looking forward to another successful season.

Mr Brend, who became president in July 2005, wished the club continued success.
