PRE-SEASON finished with a six-goal second-half burst from Barnstaple Town against Appledore last night.
Leading 1-0 at the break, the Southern League newcomers’ fitness told as they put their North Devon neighbours to the sword and ran out 7-0 winners.
Ryan Turner – who was introduced on the hour – led the way with a hat-trick in just five minutes. His first was stabbed home from six yards, he broke the offside trap to finish for his second and then raced through for a clinical third.
That made it 4-0, Scott Sharp having opened the scoring in the first half when he ran onto Liam Gregory’s through-ball and fired past Jimmy Thorne.
The goals – along with the rain – continued to flow and Dave Pearse made it 5-0 with 15 minutes left after Turner charged down a clearance by Thorne, Town’s reserve keeper.
Shaun Copp added a fine strike from the edge of the box to his impressive pre-season and Jack Jenkins rounded off the scoring with a lovely finish after Turner’s inspired backheel.
It was a stark contrast to Friday’s penultimate friendly, when Barnstaple were beaten 2-1 at home by Exmouth Town. Turner scored the Barum goal.
