SHAUN Copp’s late free-kick saved Barnstaple Town from a fourth successive home league defeat in a 1-1 draw with Wantage Town.
Copp stepped up in the 88th minute to curl a 20-yard shot into the corner and deny the visitors a first win of the season in Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West.
A disappointing game – following Barnstaple’s FA Trophy exploits at Farnborough last week – had little going for it aside from the quality of the two goals.
Wantage took the lead after just seven minutes with a fierce strike into the top corner by Jared Jones.
Without a goal in the league at Mill Road since August 16, Barnstaple pressed for an equaliser but increasingly lacked ideas for breaking down the visitors’ defence.
Lee Francis and Dave Pearse both went close with headers but they needed a set-piece to finally find the net two minutes from time.
Liam Gregory scored twice from free-kicks at Farnborough but, when Wantage were penalised for handball, it was Copp who flighted the ball past keeper Edward Cavanaugh.
