Barnstaple Town are through to the first qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Barum defeated Clevedon Town 1-0 at Mill Road on Saturday in the competition’s preliminary round, with Jordan Charran scoring the decisive goal after 62 minutes.
The Barnstaple striker got the final touch in a flowing move, which saw Niall Heeney and Fletcher Williams link up before finding Shaun Copp.
Copp beat his defender before sending a lob over the goalkeeper, which Charran duly finished off.
The result marks the first win of the season for Richard Pears’ side, following defeats to Totton and Larkhall Athletic in Evo-Stik League South West.
Pears said: “I’m really, really pleased that the players showed character and resilience to bounce back from a poor performance in mid-week.
“We produced a solid performance to get through to the next round.”
“We’ve got Bridport away next, and that’s another winnable game for us.
“It’s increased our confidence, which is what we need.”
Pears once again asked for patience from the Barum faithful following the result.
“I know it’s hard but if they can do that it will be fruitful for everyone,” he said.
“It wasn’t pretty at times but it was effective, and that was important.”
A bank holiday double header sees Pears and his side travel to Cinderford Town on Saturday before welcoming Bideford on Monday afternoon.
“At the moment we’re concentrating on the Cinderford game and getting our first points on the board, and hopefully our first win,” said Pears.
“If we can take the positives from Saturday into that game then it gives us a the opportunity to get something.
“The Bideford game is a local derby, and form is going to go out of the window, so from our players’ point of view, we’ve got nothing to lose.
“There’s likely to be a big crowd, and it’s going to be a first for a lot of them, including myself.
“You look at that type of game and it’s about local pride and I’m expecting it to be about who wants it more.”
