Barnstaple Town manager Richard Pears looking to bring in more players after Emirates FA Cup exit

Barnstaple Town will play no further part in the Emirates FA Cup this season.

Barum were knocked out in the first qualifying round on Saturday, going down 1-0 to Toolstation Western League Premier side Bridport.

The home side got the decisive goal after 24 minutes when Tom Richardson got on the end of an Andy Martin free kick before beating goalkeeper Robbie Powell from 12 yards.

Barnstaple Town manager Richard Pears said he was ‘disappointed from start to finish’ with Saturday’s game.

“I thought Bridport thoroughly deserved the win and to get through to the next round of the competition,” he said.

“They were the better team on the day and from our point of view it was a really disappointing part of a low weekend. There’s nothing much really that we can take away as positives other than how we need to regroup and show some character and resilience and bounce back with a performance against North Leigh on Saturday.”

The result has served as a catalyst for Pears to make changes to his squad, releasing Aaron Denny and Teigan Rosenquest.

On Wednesday, Barum are set to play Ilfracombe Town in a friendly match at Mill Road, as Pears looks to bring in a few more players.

Kai Fisher is set to return after spending time at Street.

“It’s an opportunity for me to bring in fresh blood,” said Pears.

“What was disappointing on Saturday, I felt like some of the players didn’t give enough for the shirt, and that needs to be the minimum requirement.

“We’ve shown we need to add more quality in various areas.

“After such a good performance at Cinderford, where we played really well, and in parts we played well against Bideford, to go out of the cup is a blow.”

“That’s why we’ve got a friendly in, to get them back in the right frame of mind and improve our performance before Saturday.”

Barnstaple are on the road again this weekend, making the long trip to North Leigh.

Their opponents are unbeaten since an opening day defeat against Bristol Manor Farm.
