Barnstaple Town were picked apart by Salisbury in Evo-Stik League South West this afternoon (Saturday).
Barum were defeated 2-0 by Steve Claridge’s side after Stuart Green and Zack Kotwica netted either side of half time.
The result leaves Richard Pears’ side without a win from their last three and 19th in the League South West table.
The visitors started applying the pressure from the off, with Neal Osborn called into action in the first three minutes.
Lewis Benson looked dangerous down Salisbury’s right flank, and his cross in the sixth minute almost unlocked the Barnstaple defence for the opening goal. With Daniel Young running to meet his cross at the back post, Max Gillard was able to intervene and see the ball out for a corner before Young could get a shot away.
Barnstaple settled into the game though and had chances of their own too. Jed Harper-Penman was teed up by Gillard only to fire over the bar.
Minutes later Harper-Penman’s long free-kick came out to Chris Ibbeson, who blasted a volley at goal only to see it deflected for a corner.
But Salisbury continued to look dangerous and after 32 minutes Green gave the visitors the lead.
It was a case of being in the right place at the right time for the forward, who preyed on what was an excellent low save from Osborn to put the loose ball into the net.
Jordan Charran went close to getting an equaliser for Barum five minutes into the second half, capitalising on a missed header and getting one-on-one with keeper Charlie Searle. The striker’s chipped effort beat the Whites’ keeper, but landed off target.
A minute later the visitors doubled their lead. Benson’s cross from the right wasn’t dealt with and bounced straight through to Kotwica. The Gloucester City loanee made no mistake with his finish, slotting the ball low to Osborn’s right.
Despite the result, the Barnstaple keeper’s performance was a highlight for the home side, and he produced some good saves to keep the score at 2-0. First tipping a Young shot over the bar and later standing tall and thwarting Green as he skipped through the Barum defence.
The hosts kept searching for a goal, and their best chance fell to substitute Tallan Mitchell. Teed up by Charran, the midfielder ran onto the ball, but his finish from 12 yards went high over the bar.
