The numbers 25 and 70 signify a special mention on the Football calendar in 2019 for Barnstaple Town Football Club.
It was 25 years ago, season 1993/94, that then Manager Bryan Hill, ably assisted by Coach Paul Hillier, masterminded the winning of the Western Football League First Division.
The goalscoring feats of Martin Nicholls and Richard Hill added to by the defensive qualities of Peter Copeland, Mark Creek and Mark Richards, earned Barnstaple Town their first silverware of any significance since the Western Football League Premier Championship of 1979-80.
The number 70 takes us back to 1949, 70 years since when Barnstaple Town Football Club first became a semi professional club. Four players that year put pen to paper, Arthur Coles, Horace Pickard, Harry Sutherland and Gordon Hutchings, thus ending any further involvement in the F.A. Amateur Cup. This was the beginning of a whole new chapter in the history of the club.
I would like to see the club mark these two historic events with some form of celebration, certainly a players reunion comes to mind.
Something to think about in the coming months, with possibly late March or early April a good time to pencil in an event/s.
