Barnstaple Town Football Club are celebrating 70 years as a semi-professional club this season.
It was August 1949 when four of the playing staff put pen to paper – Arthur Coles, Gordon Hutchings, Horace Pickard and Harry Sutherland.
To mark the occasion it has been decided to revisit the clubs that were members of the Western Football League Division Two in the 1949/50 season. No less than 18 clubs made up the membership, but sadly Hoffman Athletic, Douglas, Bristol Aeroplane Company, and National Smelting Company no longer exist.
The aim is to visit as many, if not all, of the remaining 14 clubs by car in a time of 14 hours. The estimated mileage is 395, and you can pledge your sponsorship according to the clubs visited in the 14 hour period.
Our route for the ground hop will take us to: Bridgwater Town, Weston-Super-Mare, Clevedon Town, Bristol City, Stonehouse, Cinderford Town, Swindon Town, Chippenham Town, Trowbridge Town, Frome Town, Radstock Town, Welton Rovers, Dorchester Town, and arriving home at Mill Road, Barnstaple.
Again we look to engage with the local community and we are pleased to announce that 50% of the profit from the sponsored ‘Ground Hop’ will go to local based North Devon charity – Everything Ellie (Charity No. 1164084)
Sponsorship has largely been by sponsorship forms during our home match days, but you can pledge your sponsorship of the event online via the following link: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RhianeEaston2
Barnstaple Town Football Club would like to thank Barnstaple Nissan for their generous sponsorship of a car for the day, and to Adam May, Senior Dealership Manager at Barnstaple Nissan for his support and assistance.
The journey will take place this Friday, the 27th of September. And upon arrival back at Barnstaple Town Football Club we will be hosting a Race Night + players reunion at the club, the bar will be open from 6:30, with the race night starting at 7:30. The event is being attended by a host of former players and managers from the 1950’s to the current day. This event is open to any former players, committee, and supporters alike.
If you are a former player, committee member, or supporter, we would very much like to see you this Friday evening.
