ROSS McNab scored a second-half winner for Bridgwater Town in this afternoon’s pre-season friendly against Barnstaple Town at Mill Road.
The striker nipped in to beat goalkeeper Jimmy Thorne to the ball and slot the 69th-minute goal that gave the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One side a 2-1 victory.
Bridgwater, who beat Bideford 2-0 on Tuesday night, took the lead for the first time in the 22nd minute when Sean Anthony slapped a volley into the corner of the net from the edge of the area.
Barnstaple, preparing for their return to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division after last season’s promotion, had looked the better side in the attacking third.
They equalised on 36 minutes with a length-of-the-field counter-attack. Scott Huxtable’s cross from the right byline was gathered by Dave Pearse who turned and set up strike partner Will Nicholls for the finish.
Several substitutions contributed to a more scrappy second half. It was a competitive match, though, and tempers boiled over following a clash between McNab, who was yellow-carded, and Barnstaple captain Aaron Harper-Penman.
Barnstaple complete their pre-season programme on Tuesday with a trip to another Southern Division One side, Taunton Town (7.45pm).
They are at home against Bradford Town for their first league game next Saturday (3pm).
