Barnstaple Town Football Club are saddened to hear the news that former defender Royce Godbeer has recently passed away aged 94 years.

The “find of the season” was how the press described the 25 year old after he had joined from Heavitree United.

In his first season, he played in all Barnstaple Town’s Western League fixtures and went on to make 304 appearances.

He was a member of the team that won the League Championships in 1949-50, 1952-53 and reaching the F.A.Cup First Round Proper in seasons 1951-52 and 1954-55.

He was a member of the ‘fab four’  when in August 1949, along with Arthur Coles, Harry Sutherland and Gordon Hutchings, signed pro’ forms thus making Barnstaple Town the first non-league  semi pro club in Devon.

He joined Barnstaple Town Football Club in 1949 until 1957.

Barnstaple Town Football Club extend their condolences to family and friends of Royce
